The Game Settings That Actually Save Your Battery

The Game Settings That Actually Save Your Battery

September 5, 2026 · Markus Lindqvist

We test a lot of games on a lot of phones, and the same handful of settings keep showing up as the difference between a smooth hour and a dead battery. Here's what we check first on anything we review.

Frame rate cap is the big one. Many games default to the highest your screen supports, and dropping from 60 to 30 fps can noticeably extend playtime without hurting most casual or strategy titles. Fast racers are the exception — there you'll feel it.

Resolution scaling is the quiet hero. Games rarely advertise it, but nudging render quality down a step often looks nearly identical while cutting heat and drain. In Emberfall Saga we lost almost nothing visually by doing exactly that.

Turn off unnecessary effects — screen shake, extra particles, dynamic shadows. Individually small, collectively meaningful. And check whether the game has a dedicated battery or 'eco' mode; some do, buried in the menus.

Last tip: lower your screen brightness before blaming the game. On OLED phones the display is often the biggest drain of all, and no in-game setting fixes that.
